This will be our 3rd Year Celebrating the Surveying Profession, as a Community, Globally, in a single day!

Where will You Be on June 21 @Noon?

Survey Earth in a Day 3D is a global surveying event, which is open for any professional specializing in the use of survey grade GNSS equipment, and/or the analysis of the resultant data. Our only requirement is that measurements be made with survey grade GNSS equipment at noon on June 21. In order to give us a rough idea of where everyone will be making GNSS observations, first, double click and find the location where you will be gathering GNSS data from @noon for Survey Earth in a Day. In the form that pops up, please tell us the type of location and a short description of what this place is.

Is it Noon where you live? Got Data?

You can also tell us where you'll be through our Facebook App.

@ NOON: Simply take a GNSS reading at Noon. This can be at your home, office or jobsite. The goal is to have as many points around the world from as many locations as possible.
All data submitted to Survey Earth in a Day should be in RINEX format. If we all use the same format, it will be easier to post-process the data.
LSU will soon begin Live Q&A sessions with video on the SEIAD Google + Community in preparation of the event.

Collaborate with other land surveyors who value their profession
Do your part to promote public awareness regarding the importance of what you do.

Only a professional land surveyor can produce the accuracy needed for this event.  If you are a geospatial professional with access to survey grade GPS equipment, you should consider helping us set a world's record, right from where you live and work! Only a surveyor can provide the kind of precision that will be needed to truly understand the shape of planet earth. Just imagine how much this could help our industry.

You Care About Your Profession

Surveying Profession
Put Your Local Surveyors on the Map!
Create Public Awareness in Your Area of the World
Land surveying is not a glorified profession, but the importance of land surveyors to society and civilization is immeasurable.  An event like Survey Earth in a Day is instrumental in creating public awareness of this importance.
On the day of the solstice June 21 2014, geospatial professionals around the world and members of Land Surveyors United (a global support network for land surveyors) will once again be simultaneously recording survey grade GPS data from thousands of points around the globe, in order to gain a more accurate understanding of the earth's surface. The first annual Survey Earth in a Day event was successful in establishing many new understandings between geospatial and geomatics professionals and the general public on geospatial issues. With a mission not only to learn more about the earth's surface but also monitor its changes over time, and the changes in public perspective, as a global community, we may be more capable of assessing our future.

As many of you know, Survey Earth in a Day 2.0 occurs on the Friday during International Surveyors Week 2013.
Read More about International Surveyors Week Here.

PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYORS OF THE WORLD UNITE!

As anticipated, the second annual International Surveyors Week begins now, once again uniting professional land surveyors on a global scale. During this week you will be accomplishing two important issues for land surveyors:

1) Educating the public regarding the importance of professional land surveyors to society and...

2) Cultivating a real global community for land surveyors to grow and thrive within. International Surveyors Week 2013 is an event during which land surveyors throughout the world will get gain knowledge from each other, demonstrate land surveying skills, and challenge the public image of surveyors worldwide. For this reason, the days of this week have been deliniated as follows, allowing surveyors from all regions of the planet to contribute to the community with location in mind.

FRIDAY: SURVEY EARTH IN A DAY 2.0

Survey Earth in a Day 2.0 [Website] [Facebook Page] [Event on Facebook] [Google Plus]

Please reserve as much time as you are willing to contribute on June 21, 2013, at Noon, to strengthen and demystify the surveying profession, industry among the professionals of the world, the manufacturers of the equipment that you use, and among the general public, who may have little understanding of your role in the development of the infrastructure, scientific breakthroughs and daily functionality of the way of life that you enjoy and want to improve through your involvement.

Tell Us Where You Will Be @ Noon

While the week progresses, please take a moment to tell us where you plan to be at noon on June 21st here. Note: On Thursday we will post the official form for submitting your GPS data on Friday.

Survey Earth in a Day 2.0 (2013) will be building upon the foundation of the success of last year's first-of-its-kind Survey Earth event. Once again, on the day of the solstice, June 21, 2013, professional land surveyors around the world and members of Land Surveyors United will be simultaneously recording survey-grade GPS observations from thousands of locations around the globe, in order to both educate the public regarding the importance of professional land surveyors to society and gain a more accurate understanding of the Earth's surface.

On your behalf, Land Surveyors United has set up a system of communication using many of the most utilized sources in social media to help you along the way.

Only Survey Grade GPS Will Be Accepted

No Cellphone GPS Please
Just 23 Days until Survey Earth in a Day 2.0 so we should go over a few points regarding the requirements and types of GPS Data that will be accepted.

Cellphone GPS is only accurate to +/- 30 Meters. Survey grade GPS can be accurate to close to a centimeter or more. Therefore, only a professional land surveyor can improve the accuracy of web-based maps. Imagine how much land surveyors could change the state of web-mapping when we, as a community simultaneously measure the entire planet on the longest day of the year from thousands of locations around earth. We can show the public how truly important land surveyors are to society. Get Involved! It will only take 5-10 minutes of your time on June 21st at noon.

Take a measurement at a known point, send in your RINEX data and let's redraw the world, together!

No Cellphone GPS Data Please

@ NOON: Simply take a GPS reading at Noon.

This will all occur at 12 Noon in all locations across earth.

Surveyor Markers and Benchmarks
Choosing a location to capture a simple GPS reading on June 21st should be easy for any professional land surveyor.  You could choose a location near your home or office, some known control point in your geographic area or even at the jobsite you happen to be working at noon.  There are millions of control points around planet earth to choose from.  Take a look at some of the terrific photos submitted by land surveyors to Land Surveyors United, showcasing benchmarks, markers and control points in virtually every place on the planet.  Here is an interesting album from the site which pulls hundreds of these submissions together into one place.

Survey Earth in a Day is Happening in a BIG Way

Survey Earth in a Day EventWe're excited to have the support of American Congress of Surveying and Mapping in its last days.  In the newest issue of the ACSM Bulletin, you will find a nice editorial about Survey Earth in a Day event, happening at NOON in all areas of the world on June 20th, the summer solstice.

What Makes this Event Special?

  • A geospatial event of this magnitude has never before been attempted, ever.
  • There has never been an event in history which geospatial professionals in any area of the world can participate
  • This event will be reoccurring every year on the same day- the longest day of the year and summer solstice in June.
  • Survey Earth in a Day gives surveyors in areas of the world with little representation the opportunity to put their societies on the map.
  • For the first time in the history of humanity, the surveyors of the world can unite to collaborate on a single project, for purposes of education and for the benefit of science.
